Mike Aheron

Mike Aheron

While we're waiting for a better obit ...

Since Mike was one of seven Michael's in Fairchild (out of 70 or so boys) in our first year, he was rarely called by his first name. He was Reb (being a Virginia guy; a name lacking sensitivity), or Junior (as he roomed with another, larger Mike), or Aheron.

Mike roomed with that larger Mike again first semester sophomore year among the Fairchild contingent that moved en masse to Barrows, then with Bill Killoran second semester after Oberlin and the larger Mike agreed that larger Mike wasn't a good fit with the college, academically. Junior year, Mike lived in North with Bert Whitaker and then stayed in North as a senior year R.A. For four years, he was an avid intramural hockey skater and a wonderful companion in the Rathskeller and elsewhere ("beer [pause] is delightful", he was wont to observe).

Third-party origin stories for a married couple can be tricky, so to skip to the documents ... Mike married Avis Lee ('75) during Commencement / Reunion weekend, May 24, 1975 in Fairchild Chapel among family and many classmates from our class and Avis'. They returned to Richmond VA, where Mike had just finished his first year of law school. Upon graduation, they moved to Roanoke, where Mike's family had been for generations. Daughter Sarah was born in 1981, followed by her sister Grace in 1991.

Mike had a long career as a respected real estate attorney, still playing hockey when opportunity presented, still enjoying beer (and a good G&T). Sh*t happened, and it took a while for the medicos to figure out that Mike was stricken with an unusual form of ALS, which Mike and Avis adapted to as well as one can. Mike changed his machine voice from time to time once his vocal cords failed him, and the Sexy Female might have been his favorite. ALS finally did him in on August 13, 2004.

Fun Fact: Mike was not only a literal Boy Scout, but an actual Eagle Scout. In addition, in high school he was president of his class as a freshman, sophomore, and as a junior; but not as a senior, when he was elected student body president.

Another: Mike's sister Susan was the longtime Chief of Staff to US Senator John Warner.
