Karen and I met freshman year when we both lived in Burton Hall. She remained my friend through all four years at Oberlin as well as in the following years, until her passing from heart disease in January of 2021. Karen was on one of my only friends who, like me, never married and never had children. We took many trips together both in the US and overseas. She influenced me to try Habitat for Humanity, Road Scholar as well as H&R Block. Karen, who lived in Denver, was a big Colorado Rockies fan. She loved skiing and camping.
One of my fondest memories of Karen was the time we spent fall break in Chicago visiting my father. One day we drove out to Wrigley Field (home of the Chicago Cubs). The baseball season was over for the Cubs but for some reason the stadium was wide open. We went inside, walked around the stands and then jumped a short fence and ran the bases as if we'd both just hit home runs. We then high-tailed it out of there before we could get arrested for trespassing!
I still miss Karen to this day and it will be very sad for me to attend the reunion knowing she won't be there.
Thank you for sharing these memories of Karen. I too met her at Burton in freshman year. We bonded as music students who were not in the Con. I think Karen played oboe.
I visited her home in West New York one summer and attended a "Mostly Mozart" concert at Lincoln Center, my first trip to that venue. Karen also cajoled me into driving my manual tranmission ("stick") VW Beetle to Bear Mountain , NY. An experience on many levels!
I regret that we lost touch over the years. Again, thanks for sharing.
