Donald Gest

Received an MS in geology from University of Oregon in 1977. Worked geology jobs for 3 years, while playing Celtic music on the side. In 1980, I moved to Tucson, AZ where I worked for the Arizona Bureau of Geology, and then the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. In 1983, I began teaching intro. geology at Pima Community College. I just retired from teaching part-time-- 1983 to 2023! I have also been presenting concerts in Tucson since 1983, and still am, as Executive Director of In Concert! Tucson; visit www.inconcerttucson.com. I am strongly considering retiring from concert presenting as well, and am also considering moving to Silver City, Mew Mexico

I got interested in geology through professor Norman Grant, who was visiting from England, and an expert on the just-then emerging theory of plate tectonics. My only C was given to me by James Powell, who taught a tough course in mineralogy, then continued on to be college President. I continued and successfully finished a geology major. I still know James after 50+ years, and his son Dirk, who plays music and produces albums. My brother Ted Gest is 6 years older. He also attended Oberlin and went on to a successful career in journalism. i am strongly considering coming to the reunion.

I spent a semester in Boulder, Colorado ring bicycles and helping a friend with his bicycle equipment mail order shop.

I am and was very interested in bicycles and bicycling. One of my winter term projects was to go to London--yes England; where I apprenticed in frame building at the Witcomb bike frame making shop. I came back and made a bike frame and I rode that bicycle for many years,
